CONTINUOUS METAL FORMING

The forming of metal plates only can be modeled with Eulerian methods (mesh fixed in space), since the very long rolling length of plates during the forming process makes a Lagrangian description not feasible. In the calculation shown here negligible wall friction is assumed, so that results can be interpreted more easily. The first picture shows the calculated velocity vectors in the Eulerian mesh.

In the calculation a Nadai hardening yield surface to model the stiffening effect of the metal when it is in the plastic region. The second picture shows the size of plastic strains. At the left edge virgin metal enters the mesh, and at the right edge plastified metal leaves the mesh.
